Health and Safety on the farm

Hazel Brow is a working farm. All farms are hazardous places unless care is taken. Please take care.

Hand wipes are placed around the farm, please use them if needed, they will clean hands but will not kill bacteria

Alcohol based sanitising hand gel is provided at strategic points around the farm, it will kill bacteria, please use it on clean hands.

After your visit and before eating or drinking wash your hands with soap and water

If you suffer from eczema please ask our farm staff for advice.

We provide supervised contact with ANIMALS

But at all times we need to take care. Animals can…
  • Bite, butt or stamp if they feel angry or threatened
  • Snatch food if they are kept waiting
  • Be unpredictable
  • Carry germs
Visitors should avoid…
  • Teasing animals with food
  • Chasing animals
  • Leaving children unsupervised

When you finished touching or feeding the animals

PERSONAL HEALTH AND HYGIENE

Hands
  • cover all cuts with a waterproof dressing before starting your visit (available from the café)
  • keep hands away from face and mouth
  • clean and sanitise hands after contact with animals, gates, fences, animal bedding (straw) or feedstuffs

Clothes, footwear and pushchairs
  • clean dirty footwear and pushchair wheels at the facilities provided
  • always clean hands after changing or cleaning footwear
  • if there is a serious soiling of clothes or footwear please ask farm staff for assistance
Pregnant women (and others with low immunity levels)
  • avoid contact with new-born lambs and their mothers
Food
  • Do not eat or drink around the farm

FARM STRUCTURES AND MACHINERY


All our buildings, structures and machinery are checked regularly for hazards
But at all times we need to take care
  • field walls are made of dry stone which can easily dislodge
  • fences and gates have wire which can easily snag, tear or splinter
  • tractors and other vehicles may be moving around the farm
  • hay bales and silage are heavy and may be insecure

Visitors should…
  • avoid climbing on any bales, structures or machinery
  • leave all gates as you find them
  • keep to the paths around the farm and across the fields
